2019 has been an incredible year for us at Digital Cake, so we thought; “Why not end on a high and officially launch our new Shopify focused networking venture?”

And we’re pleased to say that our first-ever ‘Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Shopify meetup’ was a huge success!

What you can expect from our ‘Shopify Birmingham Jewellery Quarter meetup’

Our company values are founded in ambition, approachability and energy, which is exactly what we will be bringing to all of our meetups. These values reflect our drive to put Birmingham on the map for digital innovation while always pushing for the best for ourselves and our clients! We also want these meetups to be an approachable and friendly space for those that are new to the industry and eager to share in our enthusiasm for ecommerce.

At our first event, hosted right here at Digital Cake HQ in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter, we set out to bring together the local Shopify community and introduce up-and-coming independent businesses with more experienced online merchants to share knowledge and enthusiasm for the ecommerce industry. 

As we continue to grow alongside our clients and Shopify, we want to make sure that we are taking full advantage of everything that the industry has to offer while sharing this information with independent brands who are looking to kickstart their own Shopify journey.

Event one round-up: A Q&A with P&Co.

We were thrilled to be joined by our clients Adison Rudall, Chief Marketing officer, and Jordan Brookes, Head of Operations & Production, from  P&Co for this first event, who took part in a Q&A session and answered questions about their own ecommerce journey and how Shopify has enabled them to successfully grow their online business.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend, here are the key takeaways from the Q&A;

1. Know your customers.

If your business is solely online, figuring out who your customers actually are will require a bit more research than if you owned a traditional brick-and-mortar store! As you can’t physically see your customers enter a shop to know who they are or what they want from a shopping experience with your brand, you will need to engage directly with them via your online channels to find out this information.

While social media will provide you with a lot of data regarding your existing customer demographics such as age, gender and location, finding out what your customers think of your brand and what they expect from your brand isn’t as clear. You can, however, utilise tools on social media such as Instagram Polls, Questions, Chat and Quizzes to talk with your followers and gain this vital insight.

You can also use your engaged customer database, gathered from email signups and previous purchasers, to gain additional insight. Create a survey to send to this database asking the critical questions that you need to ask to gain a deeper understanding of what your typical customer looks like and how they feel about your brand.

2. It all starts with an idea and passion!

P&Co originally started with the two co-founders, Lee and Adison, printing t-shirts in their bedrooms. Their next employee was Jordan who is their Operations & Production manager. From here, they now have a team of 14 who all share the drive and enthusiasm for the brand that has seen P&Co grow into the successful Shopify business that it is today.

While your business is in this critical early stage, you need to make sure that the team you surround yourself with and the people that work on your business understand your brand and are eager to develop it to reach its full potential.

From the very beginnings, P&Co’s core values have been creativity, drive and bravery. These principles not only influence the ways in which they work, from designing new products and forecasting upcoming trends, but they also play a critical role in recruiting new team members. These values are what thread everything together and ensure that the P&Co vision remains true to itself in every area of the business.

3. Combine online and offline efforts

At the core of P&Co is community and customers experience will remain a key focus for P&Co for 2020 onwards. This includes a specific focus on how customers experience the brand from all touchpoints, whether it’s via social media or direct website traffic all the way to when the physical product reaches them. 

With this in mind, 2020 is going to include a lot more events and pop-ups to get their products in front of potential customers before they purchase or experience the brand online. These events will also allow P&Co to meet their global community via official meetups and warehouse sales while also giving them the space to conduct focus groups to gain an even greater insight into what their community hopes to see from the brand.
